Hair waxing methods have certainly changed over the years, just like
anything else that can be improved upon, including ways of removing
hair, in general. For example, since even as far back as ancient Egypt,
where women had to follow the queen with having to remove all body hair
(as it was the standard for beauty back then), a method called
“sugaring” (made from a combination of honey and oil) was used as well
as depilatory creams created for the job. Waxing itself started in
ancient Rome, with resin from trees pitch used as the main ingredients.
No matter when it was utilized, the same idea seemed to stick (no pun
intended!) through the ages up through the sixteenth century, when it
was banned in France, and other nations followed suit.

It’s interesting how, in even today’s fashion world, France is still
on the cutting edge of fashion, where others follow suit. Waxing came
alive in the 1960’s, when the bikini came into fashion. And yes, France
was the foremother of bikinis, when the first ones showed up on her
beaches, outrageously, in the year 1947. Since then, women and men
everywhere have utilized waxing techniques to remove hair from specific
parts of the body. Let’s look at the areas of the body that can be
waxed, the methods used to perform the waxing, and any special
instructions that go along with each section.
- Face - No, women do not necessarily have the 5’oclock
shadow going on, but depending on genes and age, hair will show up
on the upper life, the chin and sides of the face and in great
amounts, too.
- Eyebrows - Another trick of genetics; some women
experience a “uni-brow”, or excess hair growth between the eyebrows.
This can be helped by waxing.
- Underarms - Typically in North America, women have
traditionally kept their armpits free of hair. Some still prefer the
“Euro” look of natural hair growth. It’s all a matter of preference.
- Legs/Feet - We’re mentioning them both here, if only
because legs traditionally are shaven in North America, and
sometimes the tops of the feet, if there are open toe shoes or
sandals hanging in the balance.
- Bikini Line – This is traditionally done for those who
wear bikinis or at least need to have hair removed prior to donning
any kind of bathing suit. As long as there is at least ¼ of an inch
that has grown out, a salon will perform this for you, and as gently
as possible.
- The Brazilian - Yes, this is done for women, too! Of
course they do not have the genitals men do, but the outer labia and
surrounding area (even the very back, between the buttocks!) is
treated as gently as is possible and for maximum results. Salons
that do this must adhere to strict health codes, in order to avoid
infection.
The methods that salons and day spas use can be similar to that of
the home-use packages. However, sometimes they will have special
equipment that will ease in both the application of the wax and
subsequent removal. Additionally, that there is preconditioning
performed, which is special type of lotion applied to the skin prior to
the waxing since it will help open the pores a bit for the best results,
is something to consider, since this type of item is not available to
consumers at this time.
And there you have it! Now,you know what parts of the body are waxed on
both sexes, which are pretty much the same with the exception of the
chest and back. Some women might, indeed, have chest or back hair that
they want to remove, so we are just informing you as to what the average
person will do for waxing. It is always advised that you try waxing at a
salon prior to attempting to do it yourself, since you will both see how
it is properly done and you will also see if you have a bad reaction,
such as blistering or burning from the wax application. Some people
really are allergic to it, so please bear this in mind.
